If you smell burning while the dryer is running: stop the dryer immediately, unplug it or shut off the gas supply if it’s safe to do so, and don’t run it again until the vent has been inspected. Don’t try to diagnose a hot dryer mid-cycle by opening it up — let it cool and get it checked.

Fire Safety Beyond Just Cleaning

  • Clean the lint trap after every load — this catches most, not all, of the lint; the rest travels into the duct over time.
  • Never run a dryer unattended overnight or while you’re out of the house for extended periods, especially if the vent hasn’t been checked recently.
  • Keep the area around the dryer clear of stored items, especially anything flammable.
  • Have gas dryer connections checked when the vent is serviced — a disturbed gas line is a separate risk worth having a professional handle.
  • Schedule cleaning on a real interval, not “whenever it crosses my mind” — most households benefit from annual service, and homes with longer or older duct runs often benefit from every 6–9 months.
